New Ways to Monitor Patients at Home
As Insurers Increasingly Cover ‘Telemedicine,’ Companies Launch Wave of Devices
Wall Street Journal, April 18, 2006
NEW YORK - In an April 18, 2006 Wall Street Journal article by Elena Cherney, Cardiocom President, Daniel Cosentino, was featured discussing how he now sells monitors to insurers covering patients in most states. The article provided insights into the growing array of devices in the telemedicine market and the use of those home monitoring devices for individuals with chronic illness. The writer specifically noted that device makers say that telemonitoring devices allow health care providers to care for larger number of patients with conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and congestive heart failure.
The article featured a photograph of the Cardiocom Telescale™ and noted its use in monitoring patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) to check deterioration of health status. In addition to measuring and transmitting daily weight, the device uses two-way messaging to ask for patient responses to a series of questions about their symptoms.
Patient Raphael Aguilar of New York was also highlighted using his Cardiocom Telescale™. Mr. Aguilar has been treated at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, which contracts with Cardiocom to lease the device. The Montefiore clinical team uses daily home telemonitoring to assess the heath status, vital signs and symptoms of patients with heart failure.
